At Teys, our team is deeply committed to the long-term sustainability of this great industry and the vitality of the regional communities in which we all live and work. A recent example of this dedication is the investment in our Charlton Feedlot, culminating in the completion of a state-of-the-art, fully roofed feed shed in September 2022.
Located on over 1500 hectares, the Charlton Feedlot, acquired by Teys in 2014 and boasting a 20,000 head capacity, is a vital part of our grain fed operations. The multimillion-dollar capital investment in this new shedding project underscores our focus on continuous improvement, particularly in the care and wellbeing of our cattle.
The new “Ridgeback” shed, stretching an impressive 200 metres in length, is designed to provide permanent shade and crucial protection for our cattle from the elements. This infrastructure directly contributes to a more comfortable and stress-free environment for the cattle in our care.
Furthermore, a significant portion – almost half of the expansive shed – is dedicated to hospital pens. This space allows for enhanced monitoring and care for cattle requiring specific attention, further demonstrating our team’s proactive approach to animal welfare.
Ashley Sheahan, our General Manager of Operations at Charlton said. “While the facility is still in its early stages of operation, we are already seeing promising signs of improved cattle performance within the sheltered environment.”
“This not only benefits the animals in our care but also contributes to the overall efficiency and sustainability of our operations.”
“The Charlton shedding investment is also a tangible demonstration of Teys’ commitment to setting new standards in animal welfare within the Australian beef industry and is an integral part of our broader commitment to sustainable operations across all aspects of our business,” Ashley said.
Beyond the direct benefits to our cattle and operations, projects like the Charlton shedding initiative have a significant positive impact on the regional community. By investing in and expanding our facilities, we create employment opportunities, support local businesses, and contribute to the economic growth of the region.
At Teys, we understand that our success is linked to the health of our industry and the strength of the communities we call home. The Charlton shedding project showcases our ongoing commitment to investing in a sustainable future for Australian beef and the regional areas that underpin it. We are proud of this development and look forward to the continued positive impact it will have with the support and dedication of our Charlton feedlot team.
